InfoWhelm and Information Fluency on Youtube offers great insight to our students today. If educators want to help prepare our students for the 21st Century then we have to change how we teach students today. Memorization is now longer the answer because there is so much information that is ready and accessible that it is impossible for anyone to keep up and experts cannot censor or control what is out there so it is up to us to educate student on how to search for information effectively and process it so that they can learn. Fake News is a good way to help students understand that there are things on the web that are not accurate or real and they must authenticate what they see or hear through higher order skills before accepting anything as a fact.

Wrangling information is another way student can decide if something is valid when looking online for information. Seek, sense, and share is a great way for students and adults to filter through information to find what they need when using online resources. Whether you are looking for information or it is given to you, it is up the individual to process the information and if necessary share it with others to discuss and come to a conclusion about the information.

Inquiry learning in the classroom is the buzzword in education for classroom teachers. Schools are pushing for more inquiry based learning in the classroom, and there are steps to help teachers move in that direction. No more teacher led classroom where everything is done by the teacher; with student centered activities the students are in control of their learning and the teacher is there to help mediate and guide them when necessary. Technology and differentiation will help students learn new material and support them based on their ability. Failure is embraced and there is no fear in trying new things. Teachers have to be exciting and find new ways to engage students in a meaningful way and celebrate the work that the student do.

Digital Literacy and Digital Fluency will help prepare our students for the 21st Century. Reading, writing and gathering information through technology is being digital literate but being able to process and synthesize the information is being digital fluent. Educators and students must work toward being fluent in the world of digital information and resources and use that information for teaching and learning.

The four resources I read and watched are all a part of 21st Century Learning and each are important components that are needed to teach students today. Educators need to know and practice these skills to prepare our student for the future. The shift in teaching and learning now includes technology and resources that are used to find information, process, and synthesize it. Students are collaborating and taking control of their learning in the classroom and using higher order thinking skills in order to be successful. These are the areas that I need to work on to be relevant in today's classroom.

  1. I agree with you in that we should be teaching our students how to distinguish accurate from inaccurate information. As an adult, I am even guilty of believing everything I read on the internet.

When I was a child, inquiry based learning didn't exist. I can clearly remember sitting in my desk all day, everyday, listening to lectures from my teacher. This is not our world anymore. Many of our students have become reliant on technology, so teachers need to educate themselves on how to incorporate new technology into the classroom.
