Reflective Searching

This week I read The Information Behavior of the Researcher of the Future, How Teens Do Research, and watched Get More Out of Google. All three resources are relevant to teaching students in the classroom and in the near future as a media specialist. The Digital Age and becoming fluent are new terms that are used for Digital Natives or students today and in order to understand and keep up with technology, it is important to learn how to use the tools that students are using frequently.
Get More Out of Google is a on YouTube and it is a guide to becoming  better at searching on Google. The video showed the different tools on Google and provided examples of different searches using those tools. The video also provided useful strategies to show users how to search efficiently and effectively with results that are relevant to the user's looking for specific information. I can look up information that is targeted to my specific needs and I can spend less time looking through thousands of results which is valuable as a teacher. After looking at this video I can spend less time searching for information and resources and spend more time planning. I can also teach my students how to become better researchers and how to look at information with a critical eye.
The Information Behavior of the Researcher of the Future, is another great article to read. It was written in 2008 but the information is still relevant today. It talked about the Google Generation and we are all a part of that generation because it is easy and convenient to look up information on the internet but it is important to look at other resources when looking for information. Libraries are trying to keep up with the digital age and students are losing critical skills needed when researching information because the web and social media sites are convenient and easy to find information, but it is important to look at other resources before believing it is a fact.
Teens today what information fast, skimming through information, and chunking that information instead of reading through the entire passage or article. I am guilty of doing the same thing due to time restraints but I know how to look for information in the library or from researched articles. I have allowed students to research online but I have cautioned them to use websites and resources online that are credible. I will encourage students to use EBSCO and other research resources offered online through the library.
Filter Bubble is a new term for me and I did not realize that I was creating my own filter bubble. Although it seemed convenient to have terms or words pop up based on my previous searches, I realize that I was limiting my results, so I will ensure that I am using all of the resources possible. I want to make sure I am exposing myself to all of the information and possibilities to expand my knowledge.
